Mary’s Story & The Impact of Monthly Donors

If you’ve been walking with us for the past couple of years, then you know we have worked to incorporate trauma-informed care into every aspect of our programs and organization as we grapple with a national mental health crisis. This journey to better mental health isn’t an overnight one, but Mary Rutherford will tell you that it is absolutely one worth starting.

Mary graduated from Advance Memphis in 2010 and went to work through Advance Memphis Staffing, but has struggled to keep jobs. Over the years, she has built a strong relationship with our Director of Employment Development, Juanita Johnson, who has been a mentor and simply a listening ear when needed.

“Ms. Juanita has been very patient with me because she knows I have trust issues. I’m grateful because I know she has my best interest at heart,” said Mary.

Juanita has always asked Mary to give her a call when she was feeling low. Mary often called when she had issues with her kids or when she was feeling stressed from keeping grandkids, which was causing her to be unsuccessful at work due to poor attendance. Through time and simply being present, Juanita came to understand that there was deeper trauma that was holding Mary back, so she suggested Mary start counseling.

“Being a single parent and a survivor of domestic violence takes a big toll. Counseling is helping me to understand it wasn’t my fault. Just being able to identify what my triggers are and know what’s going on is helping me to take care of myself,” Mary explained.

Mary has now been meeting with her counselor every week for about 6 weeks and the difference in her is evident! She is smiling and her confidence is through the roof. She shared with Juanita that she’s felt better about herself than she has in a long time and wants to continue counseling.

Mary currently works at our 960 Bellevue warehouse and is also studying to get her drivers license. She told us, “Work can be stressful because of what I’ve been going through, but I’m not going to give up…nope, never!”

This transformation has been years in the making. 13 years to be exact. The time and resources we’ve been graciously given to support neighbors like Mary would not be possible without our donors, especially those in the Good Neighbor Network who partner with us in monthly giving, encouragement and prayer.

Would you consider partnering with Advance Memphis through your monthly giving as we continue walking alongside neighbors like Mary?
